April Adventures
Happy opening day for baseball! The Nats/Mets game is currently on rain delay and probably won’t happen, but I’m watching the Braves/Reds game while I edit this post.
Not too much is happening on my end, but I am two weeks behind in telling you about our adventures this month (sorry). Let’s see, what important things are happening?
Work is good. The house is good (except for the potential sewage backup that’s making our laundry room stink like sewage when we shower). Wedding planning needs to happen, but I’m being lazy about it. The weather out here can’t decide if it wants to be spring or winter, but what else is new? All things considered, things are good out here in our little Pootah bubble. The rest of the world is on fire, but we’re hanging in there.
Ian and I took a bit of an impromptu camping trip to Yuba Lake State Park. Oddly enough, this was my first camping trip ever in my life. Does that make me feel a bit fake as an outdoor enthusiast? Yes, but now I’ve done it and I liked it so I’m not a poser anymore. Ian’s also only been camping a handful of times prior to this as well, so really we’re both novices.
After getting stuck in some unfortunate middle of the afternoon on a Saturday traffic on the interstate, we made it to the park early evening on Saturday. 95% of the other people there were camping in RVs or tricked out sprinter vans, as people do out here.
This park also has beachfront camping, but we opted for the actual campsite with the fire pit and the picnic table because we didn’t really know what we were doing. We will definitely be back to off-road down to beach and camp there for next time, though. We saw a few people doing that on our way to our campsite, and it looked really fun. Plus, with vault toilets on the beach, that’s really all you need to succeed.
Ian did a great job making hot dogs on the camp stove. We lit a fire in the fire pit and sat outside without a care in the world besides accidentally starting a lakefront fire. It was nice.
Our tent was surprisingly warm and cozy. It’s kind of hard to plan when the temps are near 80 during the day and in the 40s at night but not until almost the time you wake up. When we went to bed around 10:00, it was 60, but it wasn’t until we woke up at 7:00 the next morning that the temps actually reached their low for the night. Honestly, I was coldest before bed. As I said, weird weather to plan around for tent camping besides layers being your best friend.
Ian didn’t sleep very well, but he tends to sleep poorly anywhere that isn’t his own bed. I didn’t sleep spectacularly, but I wasn’t too cold or too hot. It might have had something to do with the shrieking geese you could hear from across the lake or the loud car noise at 2:30 AM. Despite not having the best night’s sleep, it was still fun.
In the morning, we had some surprisingly not awful instant coffee from Trader Joe’s and went for a little walk on the beach before Ian was back behind the camp stove cooking up bacon and eggs. Tragically, we forgot the Old Bay for the eggs, but we powered through.
We hung around for a bit, packed up camp, and headed home. The lake is only an hour and a half away, which felt like no time at all.
We have a few other camping trips planned for later in the spring, but our inaugural camping trip was a success!
Last Saturday (April 2) was our first wedding anniversary. Can you believe that? It’s been a hell of a year. Ian caught a head cold and was pretty miserable the whole weekend, but we did celebrate ourselves by buying a grill and repotting our plants. We sure do know how to celebrate an occasion.
Well, that’s all folks. Ian is grilling chicken wings, so I have to go help and be useful.
Until next time!
