Snowy Halloween

I drove to work through a snow cloud this week. How’s your week going?

It is mid-October and it has been snowing with high temps in the low 40s. The snow has driven away most of the fall colors from the last few weeks, and it’s been like living in a winter wonderland. I hear back at home in Maryland it’s been in the 80s. I miss home a lot, but I’d take the early snow over the extended summer any day.

Other than Ian and I realizing very quickly we are not prepared for Utah winter, this week has been pretty boring. We went on a hike to Lake Blanche on Saturday, which was absolutely gorgeous, but icy. We really should have had micro spikes for our hiking boots, but add that to the list of reasons why we realized we are unprepared for Utah winter. We decided that whoever slipped and fell the most times had to buy lunch after the hike. Seven falls later (I am totally fine by the way), and I was buying In & Out Burger.

This is a side tangent, but being from the East Coast, In & Out Burger has a reputation for being some magical burger joint from the west that will change your life. Wrong. The poor employees have to wear these demoralizing paper hats like a 1950s soda shop and then serve subpar burgers and fries. Next week, our post-hike cheeseburger is coming from Shake Shack.

Sorry this is such a short post, but there really hasn’t been much going on. We had a couple of friends over on Friday, another couple we used to work with at Roots back in Maryland, so that was fun. We also saw two moose on our hike, which was cool but also mildly terrifying after the whole spooky ordeal from last weekend. They were sitting down resting about 20 feet from the trail and didn’t seem to pose an immediate threat. We have bear spray now, so that brings a little bit of solace under the constant threat of moose/bear/cougar attack. It’s pretty awesome here, though, so I guess potentially getting eaten alive by a cougar is worth it.

In lieu of actual news and life updates, please enjoy these photos from our hike.

Can you spot the moose? Its antlers were HUGE.

The second moose didn’t have antlers.

Just kidding, it’s winter now.

The pine trees make the trail smell like Christmas.

Sadly, the ghost of Rue McClanahan was not waiting for us at the top.
